If ever there was a great game to play based on Russia and its traditions, this one from Thunderkick, entitled Babushkas is definitely it. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the word, babushka translates from the Russian language to mean either grandmother, or elderly woman. However, it can sometimes also be used to term the matryoshka dolls, also known as Russian nesting dolls, which are designed in the form of little old ladies. Of course, these dolls are of varying size and all fit inside one another, and it’s this particular item of the country that has influenced the creation of this game. With that being the case, it doesn’t just offer up icons of these dolls, but it also incorporates some music which will transport you right to the heartland of Russia while you play. And everything is offered up in the usual high quality way that Thunderkick has become known for, meaning you’ll also have a visually appealing game to play as well.
Nestled Dolls in View
Once you have loaded up the game, you’ll be presented with a regular slot game layout of five reels and three rows, so everything will be familiar enough to avid gamers. The developer has also included a total of 17 fixed pay lines into this layout, and these cannot be customised in any way. It’s upon these reels that you’ll find the game’s variety of different symbols, and these are all presented in various forms of matryoshka dolls. Each of them features a different facial expression and is also coloured differently, with offerings in green, blue, purple, pink, red, orange and yellow all making apperances.
As well as the game’s reels, rows and icons, you’ll find that the developer has added the possibility to adjust your wager each time you spin the reels. This offers up a range of between £0.10 and £100, and these can be selected from by pressing on the casino chip button. The ‘Auto Play’ button exists next to this one, and this allows you to spin the reels up to a maximum of 5,000 times at the same wager level. Meanwhile, next to this is the spin button, while at the left hand side of the screen you’re afforded the possibility of turning the sounds of the game on and off.
Uncover the Game’s Specialities
It stands to reason that a game based on nestled dolls would also hold some hidden secrets of its own, and that’s certainly true when it comes to the special features that have been included. For example, to begin with, there is a wild icon included on the reels, which is represented by an oval shape with a ‘W’ written on it. This can only show up on the third reel and it will substitute for all other symbols on the reels in order to form a winning combination.
The wild also holds an extra perk though, because if one of these shows up with a star included on it, it will open up to reveal one of three different mystery features. The mystery features start with the Scare Bear, where the lowest valued symbols on screen will, in sequence, upgrade one, two or three times. There’s also the Charm Bear, where all symbols upgrade a single level. Finally, there’s the Dance Bear which will provide you with seven freespins of the reels, during which a new wild egg will appear on reel three every spin.
There’s also the Winning Symbol Upgrade feature, where all winning icons of the same value upgrade to the next higher valued icon when this creates new or longer winning lines. Furthermore, if all of the 15 symbols showing up on the screen are of the same value after all winning symbol upgrades, they will be upgraded one more time. Symbols of 0 level will upgrade to the ghost symbol, and this awards a special pay out of 2,000 coins.

The Final Word
On the surface, Babushkas seems like a fairly generic slot offering in new online casinos, but once you start playing and get right down to the special added features that have been included, it certainly offers up an appealing game with great graphics and game play. All in all, it’s a fantastic addition to the Thunderkick catalogue.
