Released: November 2016
Let’s be honest, shall we? Who doesn’t love a story, a film, a game, hell, anything which features dragons? The mythological creature appears in numerous different forms across many different forms of entertainment media. As far as online slot games go, you’ll find quite a few of these that contain dragons as icons or as their base theme. Dragonz is one of the latest in such offerings, brought to our screens by Microgaming. Featuring the rich graphics and game play that we’ve come to expect from this developer, it’s a great offering. However, the whole game is set against a backdrop of green fields and craggy rocks, as though looking out from a cave. Of course, a dragon’s cave. And on the reels, you’ll be able to see various different icons, some of which feature actual dragons.
To Breathe Fire or Not to Breathe Fire
As far as the layout of this game goes, it is all available to view on a five reel and three row interface. Therefore, you will be playing on a fairly familiar display. Not only that, but it’s upon these reels that you’ll find the game’s variety of different symbols. These begin with the often seen A, J, K, Q, 9 and 10 icons. As such, these are fairly standard. Joining them are more thematic symbols though. There are four different types of dragon icons, each one having its own characteristics. To begin with, you will see a red dragon, taking on the form of the typical looking creature that we’ve all come to know. Joining him, there’s a blue dragon, which provides more of an ice monster. A purple dragon is also present, as is a more chunky looking green dragon.
Alongside these features, Dragonz provides players with a total of 243 different ways to win. This is a larger selection than having a specific number of lines available, which is a great perk to playing it. It isn’t a feature that you are able to change though. Instead, you only have the chance to alter the bet that you place per round. This is easily done by using the plus and minus buttons at either side of the ‘Bet’ box. Utilising this will enable you to place a minimum overall wager of £0.40 per spin. Furthermore, you can have a maximum wager of £30 in play per round. There’s also the opportunity available to use the ‘Auto Play’ button of the game at your leisure.
Flying and Soaring Through the Skies
Microgaming are, of course, very well-known for providing some of the best special features in slot games. This one is no different, enabling players to have an entertaining time while spinning the reels. To start with, you will find that there are wild icons within the game. As is the norm with such icons, the wilds stand in for any other symbol on the reels in order to form a winning combination. However, there’s an additional perk to it as well. If a wild appears on the third reel when you don’t spin a winning combination, you will trigger the ‘Wild Deal’ feature. This drops additional wilds on to other reels to provide you with a win.
However, it’s the four dragon creatures that provide the game with its best special features. Each of them has its own personality and, subsequently has its own trait. Make sure you keep your eyes open for the scatter symbols in order to trigger the freespins round, where the dragonz come into play. The scatter is a sort of shield-like icon and when three or more of them come into view in any location, the feature begins. You’ll be given one of four different freespins features, which are as follows:
- Flint, the red dragon. He provides 10 freespins with Flaming Wilds in action. This sees Flint randomly fire wild icons on to the reels during the round.
- Switch, the purple dragon. Again, you receive 10 freespins, but this time with Stashed Wilds. Switch will store non-winning icons and when three or more are in his possession, they are sent onto the reels in order to form a win.
- Frost, the blue dragon. You’ll receive 10 freespins with Frosty Wilds in this feature. Frost will glide across the screen, freezing non-winning wilds into place until they form a winning combination.
- Gobble, the green dragon. Again, you receive 10 freespins as well as Winning Wilds. This sees Gobble randomly spit wilds onto the reels which stick in place until they are no longer part of a win.
The Final Word
This one is definitely an entertaining offering from Microgaming. It fits very nicely into the developer’s catalogue of games. Rich graphics and superlative special features make for a thoroughly entertaining time, as does the fact that it features 243 different ways to win.
